Book Recommendations for the Holidays

Book Recommendations for the Holidays

Merry Christmas! If you don’t celebrate Christmas, happy whatever-you-celebrate! You can now breathe and steal some “Me Time” — the crazy holiday shopping is ova! Now you deserve to find a comfy corner, put on a detoxifying face mask, and read a good book! For me, reading falls under the category of self-care. I’ve read some good ones as of late and I wanted to share them with you. Here are some great book recommendations closing out the year or for 2020. Sounds so futuristic, right?

Educated by Tara Westover

Educated: A Memoir

I just finished this one and loved it. This memoir is about a woman who grew up with Mormon, survivalists parents. Her father, who suffered from mental illness, didn’t allow his children to attend school or receive medical attention. She grew up working in his scrap yard with a physically abusive older brother and a submissive mother.  But despite her family’s beliefs and her lack of education, at 17 she enrolls at BYU and eventually goes on to Cambridge University and Harvard. Such an inspirational story about the search for knowledge and a desire for growth. Beautifully written.

Inside Out by Demi Moore

Inside Out: A Memoir

Have you guys read this one yet? I’ve loved Demi Moore since she was on General Hospital back in the stone ages. Her new memoir is so honest and raw. She writes about the hard things she’s gone through in her life, including sexual assault, her marriages, and her kids. I got it on Audible so I heard it, not read it. I like it when the author narrates their own book, and she does. If you like her husky voice, you’ll love hearing her read her story.

Inheritance by Dani Shapiro
Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love
Another memoir I recently finished. This story is so fascinating. After taking a DNA test (Ancestry.com) the author discovers that her father (who died when she was younger) was not her biological father. She was 52 years old when she discovers this. What follows is a research-heavy, fact-finding mission to find her biological father. I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a story of family secrets, which is also the name of her (Dani Shapiro’s) podcast.  I am obsessed with her podcast, and also highly recommend.
The Telomere Effect, by Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD.
The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer

Because of course, I have to recommend some anti-aging heavy books. If you want to get geeky with it and learn the science of telomeres (a biomarker of aging), you must read this one. It’s definitely not a light read, but if you’re interested in extending your youth, this is a must-read. It’s written by the psychologist who has done the research into “how specific lifestyle and psychological habits can protect telomeres, slowing disease and improving life.”

I’m making this one a mandatory So Chickie read, along with this next one.

The Tweakments Guide: Fresher Face by Alice Hart-Davis

The Tweakments Guide: Fresher Face

Everything you want to know about Botox, fillers, laser, and any other anti-aging procedure. This woman has tried them all and has written about it in this book. SUPER informative and very thorough. An encyclopedia of cosmetic procedures.

I have to admit, I’m slightly jealous of her. I want to try all the things too! And maybe I will. It’s like when you see a commercial for a delicious dessert or otherwise yummy food and you immediately get a craving. I read about these procedures and I get the desire to do them all. But that’s just me. For you normal Chickies, it’s a great education on what’s available in the market to maintain your youth.

Please let me know if you have any book recommendations you’d like to share. I’m always on the lookout for a great read.

xoxo
